Since 1944, Smokey Bear has served as a national symbol of wildfire prevention. In 1977, Woodsy Owl ("Lend a Hand Care for the Land") joined the effort, encouraging environmental stewardship and conservation. Together, these beloved icons remind us that each of us plays a role in protecting our natural resources, wildlife, and public lands.

Dente Park, site of the Italian-American Stonecutter’s Statue, is receiving a much-needed makeover, courtesy of the Granite Center Garden Club. Over the past few weeks, members have been clearing sod, improving the soil, installing dozens of new plants, trimming back shrubs, and more. Overall, the club has more than tripled the size of the gardens. The park is a key welcoming feature at one of Barre’s most prominent gateways, situated at the intersection of Routes 62 and 302.

At the June 9th FGCV Annual Meeting held at the St Albans Museum, club members were recognized for exceptional club performance, innovative thinking projects, service milestones, leadership contributions and exceptional dedication to achieving club, state, and national mission goals.

My design methodology integrates traditional and innovative floral concepts. Participants will gain insight into conditioning techniques, sustainable mechanics, and the principles and elements of floral design. Please bring a notepad; the session promises to be engaging, and you will depart with substantial material for further reflection as you develop your own floral designs.

A third-grade student at Orchard School in South Burlington has received top honors in the state's Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest, entitled "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires: Lend a Hand, Care for the Land."

The Fall FGCV Fall Meeting was recently held at the Manchester Country Club in Manchester, VT, on October 7th, hosted by the Southern District Clubs of Arlington, Bennington, Brattleboro, Manchester, and the Green Mountain Gardeners, and coordinated by Donna Davis, Southern District Director.
