2025 FEDERATED GARDEN CLUBS VERMONT SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
I'm honored to accept your 2025 scholarship and sincerely thank you for empowering me to continue my work in the gardening and conservation world.
I'm currently a sophomore studying Wildlife
Biology at the University of Vermont.
At the crossroads of wildlife biology and horticulture, I find it imperative to create functional landscapes that are managed not only for aesthetics but also for habitat, even in the urban settings in which we live.

Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont Announces
2026 Smokey Bear Poster Contest State Winner
A third-grade student at Orchard School in South Burlington has received top honors in the state's Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest, entitled "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires: Lend a Hand, Care for the Land." Karen Villanti, representing the Burlington Garden Club, serves as the club's Smokey Bear Chairperson. Twenty students participated by designing posters that highlight important environmental safety practices. The winning entry will advance to the New England Garden Clubs competition, where it will be judged alongside submissions from six New England states.
Smokey Bear has served as a national emblem for wildfire prevention since 1944. In 1977, Woodsy Owl joined as an advocate for increased environmental awareness. Together, they promote individual responsibility in safeguarding our lands and wildlife. The Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest remains a longstanding annual event, engaging elementary schools, scout troops, and youth organizations nationwide.

THE MARY STONE GARDEN THERAPY AWARD: Established in 1980 by Mrs. Francis Stone (NH) for work done by members with handicapped, elderly, or ill in a variety of well-balanced garden-related projects, went to the Burlington Garden Club for their work with the elderly residents planting spring flowers and vegetables in the center's raised beds.

THE MARY LOUISE MARKS SMITH FLOWER SHOW SCHEDULE AWARD: Established in 1987 by Mrs. Smith (ME) for the best schedule for a Small Standard Flower Show presented by an individual garden club. The Award went to the Rutland Garden Club for their outstanding Flower Show and schedule.

THE JEANNE-MARIE PARKES AWARD: A certificate was awarded to the Burlington Garden Club for creating an educational exhibit displayed at the March 2025 Vermont State Flower Show, encouraging awareness of our environmental problems and the importance of Pollinators.

New England Photography Group: Doris Van Mullen has been accepted into the NE Garden Clubs, Inc., Pilot Photography Judging Program and can serve on photo judging panels as a New England Photography Group Photography Judge.
