Dear Members of the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont,

I am so honored to have received this year's student scholarship. I greatly appreciate your support and admire the great work that all the Garden Clubs do across the state. I am sad to miss being there and meeting with you all in Manchester, as southern Vermont feels like a second home to me. My grandfather lived in Dorset for many years and loved his vegetable garden, working in it well into his 90s.

This scholarship will help fund my master's research at the University of Vermont centered in understanding how to best manage our forests in a changing climate. I assessed the vulnerability of forest types in northern New England and now am working with landowners to identify best stewardship actions to improve climate resiliency. Stewardship is best done with future generations in mind-a Native American proverb says this best with, "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children".

Thank you again for making this scholarship possible!

Will
